| Cisco Launches super router developed by Israeli engineers | Published by: Maariv www.maariv.co.il Alex Doron 27/05/2004
| Is largest router currently in use.
team of fifty Israel engineers is behind the development of the largest communications router in the world, launched the day before yesterday by Cisco at a function marking its 20th anniversary. The engineers, most of who work in hardware, toiled on the project for more than three years, with an investment of over $100 million, of which $30 million was their salaries.
The router is designed to enable communications companies to provide simultaneous flow of video on demand to millions of subscribers, and is capable of providing data transmission speeds of 92 terabytes per second (one terabyte equals one million megabytes). The largest router currently used in telecommunication company systems reaches a speed of 40 gigabytes. The router, whose development was shrouded under a cloud of mystery and bore the code name HFR, is currently known by its official name “CRS1” or Cicso Super Router1. The work in Israel, which significantly contributed to the project, was conducted in company labs in Netanya.
The Israeli team was also involved in various software components, including optics. The router’s operating system is an innovation in and of itself, and is capable of repairing itself should a malfunction occur without stopping its operations.
The router comprises a quantum leap for the telecommunications industry worldwide. It is able to transmit, computer data, voice, advanced video and computer games to subscribers over broadband telephony. The level of service and features is unprecedented. Two communications giants, Deutsch Telecom and the American Sprint, will be the first to operate this router in their systems.
