| 'Green' pesticides startup Botanocap raises $1 million | Published by: The Marker www.themarker.com/eng Guy Griml 29/01/2007
| Pesticides are becoming increasingly notorious for the harm they can do to the environment and its denizens.
Just for instance, some chemicals imitating hormones have been implicated in turning fish hermaphroditic and in miniaturizing the male organs of alligators to the point where they can't reproduce.
Israeli startup BotanoCap, founded on oil encapsulation knowledge created at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, has scored a million dollars in funding from the BHCO group at a post-money company value of $7.5 million.
Its raison d'etre is the development of slow-release technology for essential oils, to make relatively environmentally friendly pesticides.
The company has developed a patented technology for the gradual release of essential etheric oils and natural components. It possesses patents on capturing essential oils in capsules, to achieve the delayed release effect.
Substances based on etheric oils and natural compounds are better for the environment than chemical pesticides.
Etheric oils can be produced today from some 3,000 plants. Most are of no commercial use, because they evaporate. Controlled slow release while protecting the active components until release are the main point at BotanoCap.
BotanoCap's technological platform can potentially be adapted to a vast range of uses, from medicine for humans and animals to agriculture to food additives.
