| NetReality and NetEnforcer Appliances Stop Blaster, SQLSlammer and Other Malicious, Network-Aware Viruses.
Allot Communications, the Traffic Management Company, today announced that its customers have successfully used its NetEnforcer and NetReality offerings to identify and block a variety of recent computer viruses. With Allot's Traffic Management solutions, companies can detect and monitor self-propagating virus-related traffic across their networks, and implement traffic management policies that prevent the spread of such viruses.
"As soon as we noticed spikes on specific ports, we used our NetEnforcer to block those ports from our multiple DS3 links," said Larry Roth, vice president of OnlyInternet, an Indiana-based ISP that provides Web hosting and broadband Internet services to more than 9,000 subscribers. "Within 30 minutes of detecting the problem, we were able to implement a new network policy that immediately prevented the Blaster virus from propagating to other subscribers."
While most enterprise networks utilize firewall products to block such traffic, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) oftentimes do not install firewalls on their networks in order to facilitate the necessary flow of data between network subscribers and non-subscribers outside their networks. In many instances, early warning services such as SARC provide alerts about impending virus attacks, including exploited port numbers and protocols. In these cases, Allot's customers can prevent infections by implementing traffic management policies that block these specific ports and/or protocols. If proactive policies are not in place and a computer becomes infected, Allot's products can help isolate the infected workstation and prevent the virus from spreading to other users.
Barbourville Online, a Kentucky-based ISP providing Web and broadband services to thousands of customers also used Allot's NetEnforcer to manage its inbound and outbound traffic through a recent virus attack. "Our network performance dropped significantly when a combination of viruses overwhelmed our routers and caused a 10-fold spike in our active connections," said Jack Davis, IT Director for Barbourville Online. "Within an hour, we used Allot's NetEnforcer to identify ports used by viruses, and we created policies stopping the spread of the SoBig, Blaster and SQLSlammer viruses to our user base."
The recent barrage of viruses has infected millions of users worldwide, and is responsible for untold millions in damages in the U.S. alone. By exploiting known security holes, viruses such as Blaster, and SQLSlammer not only infect and harm individual workstations, but cripple networks by generating a massive volume of network connections to spawn denial of service attacks or to spread the virus to other networked computers . In many cases, traffic volumes increase by 500% to 1000%, taking down core routers and other critical network equipment.
