TECHNOLOGY

Foam has significant advantages over alternative delivery systems as it spreads easily, can be applied to large skin areas, is readily absorbed without leaving residue and is highly tolerated due to its use of gentle, generally-recognized-as-safe, or GRAS, ingredients.

Foamix’s technological foam platforms enable the formulation, stabilization and delivery of a wide variety of drugs directly to their target site. The foam is suitable for dermal, vaginal and other applications and to treat a range of diseases and disorders. Topical application can enhance drug potency, clinical effectiveness and ease-of-use while minimizing side effects.

Platform Technology Supports a Broad Pipeline

The patented platforms include several water-containing compositions, such as emulsion or emollient foams, nano-emulsion foams and hydro-ethanolic foams; water-free compositions such as oil foams, petrolatum-based or ointment foams; and waterless hydrophilic foams, among others. These proprietary platforms are stable and can carry and deliver a variety of drug types and combination products, some of which may be unusable in other topical forms or have considerably limited durability when delivered orally or via other topical platforms, such as ointments, creams, lotions, or gels.

Minocycline foam, 1.5% for the treatment of Moderate-to-Severe Papulopustular Rosacea Rosacea: An Increasingly Widespread Skin Disorder with Significant Burdens to Patients1 Papulopustular rosacea is a chronic skin disease causing inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules) on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. It can create psychosocial burdens, such as embarrassment, anxiety and low self-esteem that can adversely affect quality of life. Rosacea is most frequently seen in adults between 30 and 60 years of age. It affects more than 16 million1 people in the United States, and accounts for approximately 5 million2 prescriptions per year. Treatments: Limited Treatment Options Present Opportunity for New Product Entry Mild papulopustular rosacea is often treated by topical antimicrobials (metronidazole, clindamycin and ivermectin), azelaic acid or retinoids, while the mainstay for the treatment of moderate-to-severe rosacea are oral antibiotics such as minocycline and doxycycline.3

FMX101 may provide a new alternative for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acne. FMX101 delivers minocycline directly to the acne-infected sebaceous glands in the skin. Since FMX101 is not administered orally, it does not need to travel through the bloodstream, thereby minimizing the risk of systemic side effects. Our foam platforms have significant advantages over alternative delivery options (such as ointments, creams, lotions, and gels). Foam spreads easily, it is readily absorbed, it does not leave a messy residue and is highly tolerable due to its use of gentle, safe ingredients.
FMX102 - for Impetigo	Phase II
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that primarily affects young children. It is typically caused by staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA, and results in red sores and lesions on the face, neck, arms and legs. MRSA infections occur in hospitals and healthcare facilities, most commonly in pediatric wards. In the early 1970s, MRSA accounted for only 2% of all staphylococcus aureus hospital-acquired infections. In 2007, it accounted for as much as 70% of these infections, warranting the need for a better treatment. Topical antibiotic therapy is considered the treatment of choice for individuals with localized impetigo, while systemic antibiotics are used for more widespread disease. Topical mupirocin (Bactroban®) is the most commonly used product to treat impetigo, with dosing (3) three times daily for 8 to 12 days.
FDX104 for Chemotherapy-Induced Rash	Phase II
Foamix is developing a topical formulation of doxycycline (FDX104). Doxycycline has pharmacologic attributes and physicochemical characteristics similar to minocycline. Based on the results of the FMX101 (minocycline foam) Phase II clinical trial for moderate-to-severe acne, we intend to conduct initial clinical trials for FDX104 in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced rash. Given the relatively small patient population affected by this condition, FDX104 may be eligible for orphan drug designation.
