DESCRIPTION

Cellect is developing an innovative technology which enables the functional selection of stem cells based on their sensitivity to apoptosis. This functional-based selection is an importantbreakthrough in the ability to isolate stem cells from mature cells, thereby enablinga variety of stem cell therapeutic applications.

The company’s first product line "ApoGraft" will include unique containers for cell selection in apoptosis-inducing microenvironment. Cellect has proved in extensive lab studies that the use of apoptosis can largely increase the stem cell concentration in samples taken from bone marrow donors, as well as umbilical cord blood. The Company’s first planned commercial product is a medical kit designed for the bone marrow transplantation market, as well as other markets which require stem cell selection. The Company estimates that in the future its technology will be integrated in many production procedures of stem cell-based product.

TECHNOLOGY

Cellect Biotechnology is based on a new concept of functional allocation, selection and use of stem cells. This concept is based on over 20 years of stem cell research, and on the cornerstone observation that stem cells tend to dynamically change in response to biological challenges (such as when they are marked or even taken out of the body), and are best characterized by functionality rather than morphology or immunological markers.

The concept of functional selection, published by Cellect’s Chief scientist, Dr. Nadir Askenasy, suggests that using functional assays, one can achieve a better, more comprehensive selection of the beneficial cells, while inducing less of a change on the cells thus maintaining their “stemness”.

Proof of concept was achieved by harnessing the functional characteristic of sensitivity to apoptosis (programmed cell death) signals. This unique feature differentiates between stem and mature cells of the Hematopoietic system, and can be used in the well accepted medical procedure – Bone marrow Transplantation (BMT). The use of this functional selection as part of the BMT procedure is expected to become a main therapeutic modality for cancer treatment but also to diseases where BMT could not be used because of its marked adverse effects.

Following the successful proof of concept in BMT, Cellect’s scientific team is now developing additional products which make use of functional aspects of other types of stem cells (e.g. mesenchymal, solid organs, etc…). Each of these functional selection processes could be used to create a new modality of regenerative medicine for a different type of medical condition.

Cellect's ApoGraft is the long sought-after methodology that achieves that dream. Backed by 7 families of patents, Cellects’ ApoGraft is aimed at becoming the industry-wide standard for enabling the use of stem cells in a myriad of regenerative medicine treatments.
