DESCRIPTION

Scent Detection Technologies (SDT) developed and manufactured trace detection products designed to detect and identify explosives materials and narcotics substances. The company’s products targeted a wide range of security checkpoint applications in the aviation security, police, law enforcement and military sectors. SDT's first product was a highly sensitive and non-invasive hand-held Electronic-Nose capable of explosives detection. The Mini-Nose for detection delivered a combination of mobility, very fast recovery time, user friendly, selectivity and sensitivity to all type of explosives including improvised materials.

TECHNOLOGY

SDT's trace detection technology is multi-disciplinary, hence integrating crystal science, chemistry, electro-chemistry, coating technology, adsorption, mechanics, electronics, embedded low-power computing, software, and digital data-processing. The technology is flexible, and is capable of "learning" to recognize new substances, thus constantly adapting to new threats. It is designed for security and homeland security and law enforcement applications. The technology delivers the highest quality, reliability and dependability standards, and the most sensitive detection thresholds.

The technology is registered and protected by The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The core technology is an amalgamation of several scientific disciplines, digitally recreating mammalian olfactory processes. These are embodied in a High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Resonator, coating chemistry and pattern recognition algorithms, deep know-how and innovative developments.

Sensitivity
The detection is based on innovative High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Resonators. A Quartz crystal resonator is a piezoelectric device, sensitive to mass changes. The resonator has a unique vibrating frequency that decreases when the mass loaded on top of the device increases. The sensitivity of such devices increases when the frequency of the resonators increases. SDT's technology enables the use of High-Frequency Quartz Crystal Resonators as sensing devices (also called Microbalance).

Selectivity
As a sensor, the microbalance device is supposed to be both sensitive- that is detect minute mass changes - and selective, substances wise - so that specific substance identification can be accomplished. In order to allow the High- Frequency Quartz Crystal Microbalance (HF-QCM) piezoelectric sensor to selectively detect specific target substances, SDT developed a series of selective coating materials for modifying the quartz crystals surfaces. These coatings are designed to selectively absorb the target substances.

STD's system employs an array of sensors, which are operated by an oscillator. Each sensor in this array is coated with a different coating, which detect a different substance. This combination of sensors and coatings delivers the high-selectivity needed for the difficult task of trace detection and recognition.

The Analysis by Pattern Recognition process - The Brain
In every detection analysis, the frequency responses of all sensors' readings over pre-determined time intervals are taken. These readings contain information on the sensor's kinetic response and on the coating's selectivity to the examined materials. The identification process occurs when a powerful pattern recognition algorithm analyzes these readings and matches them with the internal signature database of the explosive/other materials that the analyzer is familiar with.
